7:55PM
The audience takes their seats
waiting for the gala to begin.

After the organisers’ remarks,
Liu Dachuan, from Taiwan,
performed his prize-winning act.

Unlike his earlier version,
this one added more visual effects.
A pair of sisters from Gansu
performed a striking quick-change act.
A two-person quick-change
also demands close timing between the pair.
The duo from Shenzhen,
Aihemai and Zuli,
working with large apparatus,
told a love story on stage.
Chen Jinghong, also from Taiwan,
had prepared his FISM act,
but without his partner present
performed his Japan Sea championship act instead.

It was no less watchable.
Jia Wanying, from Dalian,
is said to be a junior of Ma Yanyan.
Her finale featured an outsized lollipop.
Luo Feixiong, long experienced,
took the stage himself
and performed his act.
Children in the audience were eager at the sight of the balloon hats.
Leung Ka-chun, a magician from Hong Kong,
performed a human three-cup routine.
Why “human” three cups?
The photograph explains it.
It is as outsized as it looks.
The closing act
was by Hu Linglong and An Na of Shenzhen,
who staged a jungle-adventure piece.
Also on the programme were
From
Taiwan
Wuhan
Dalian
acrobatic acts.

The gala was a strong one throughout:
the acrobatics were demanding,
and the magic came one piece after another.
After the opening,
the coming days bring
the stage newcomers’ showcase,
the close-up newcomers’ showcase,
Theory symposium
Magic lecture
and the editors will keep reporting from the site.
