He was a dancer before he was a magician. In his first years with the Happy Valley Shenzhen art troupe he danced, and he also directed magic galas — on the stage, and at the side of it. The real turn came the year he entered his master’s school: setting down a craft he had already mastered, and becoming an apprentice all over again.

His line is large-scale narrative illusion: not tricks set out one after another, but a story first, with the magic growing inside it. He has shared the stage for years with his wife Zulihumaier Wubuli; their act Magic Radiance took Gold at the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao–Taiwan Magic Festival, and the certificate names the form exactly: large-scale narrative illusion.

Two signature works. Chasing the Dream is an original large-scale urban magic-fantasy drama with nearly fifty performers on stage; in his own words, it is ‘a dream for a beginning, and a rebirth within the dream’ — a magician walks into a dreamscape under the hypnosis of a ‘Mirror Gentleman’, and returns to the stage carrying what he held on to there. Magic Show weaves comedy, audience interaction, large stage illusion and acrobatics into one programme. He also keeps the children in mind, hoping to run more magic competitions for the young and pass the craft down a generation.
