Ruxianguli: create better conditions for Shenzhen’s private troupes

People's Daily Online, Shenzhen, 30 January (Wang Xing, Liu Senjun) — On 30 January, during Shenzhen's 2024 "Two Sessions", Ruxianguli, member of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPPCC and Chief Magician of Shenzhen OCT Happy Valley Tourism Company, said in an interview that she hopes Shenzhen will give private arts troupes more care and support and help them grow bigger and stronger.

Ruxianguli explained that Shenzhen has a full range of performing arts, and that acrobatics — including magic, comedy and circus — is particularly strong, having carried many Shenzhen stories onto stages at home and abroad and "won so many awards that its hands are tired", yet it is always a case of "the flower blooms inside the wall but its fragrance is enjoyed outside".

"Shenzhen has built many new cultural facilities and venues, yet many of the city's private arts troupes have no space in which to show the public high-quality performances." She proposed that private troupes be brought into Shenzhen's cultural development, using high-quality local performing-arts products to bring public cultural spaces to life, and giving private troupes more opportunities to train, exchange and present their work.

Beyond that, Shenzhen's performing-arts sector still faces problems such as an insufficiently developed ecology of venues. "In the evening, if you want to see a stand-up show, a magic show or a play in a small theatre, there is nowhere to go." In Ruxianguli's view, culture and art cannot consist only of "brief bursts of excitement"; what is needed is to cultivate regular, branded arts performances.

"Private arts troupes have great vitality and creativity." She said that Shenzhen should keep economic and cultural development in step, make active use of the strength of private arts troupes, and create more work with cultural substance and a distinctly Shenzhen character.

"I hope Shenzhen will create better conditions for the development of private troupes, supporting them by providing venues, organising showcases and offering public assistance to privately run bodies, and will establish a lasting mechanism for healthy development, so that private troupes can truly grow bigger and stronger," Ruxianguli said.
